Title: Who has received their expansion? Thoughts?
Post by: bzeppos on February 21, 2013, 05:39:22 PM
I'm curious who has received Forcemaster vs. Warlord. When did it arrive and from whom did you order it? What type of shipping? What state/city?

I ordered mine from the publisher--thinking it would be the quickest to arrive--and sadly it has not gotten here yet. I used UPS ground shipping and live in TN. The original arrival estimate was Wednesday but now it looks like it won't be here until tomorrow or Saturday. I can't endure the wait!

Bonus questions: If you've got it, what do you think? How many times have you played the new mages? What are your favorite cards and effects? What are your favorite new tactics?

I pre ordered it from a store nearby.

I liked that one box has almost all the copies of any cards youd need in it... low level basic cards are all in 4-6 quantities, legendary expensive items all come in pairs.. theres no real need to get a second one to stock up on cards.

The only let down I had was that none of the stuff teased in that dicetower kickstarter video was included in it, so no ballista, vorpal sword, gravikar, etc.  There was also no giant killer skunk.

By in large Im pretty happy with it though.

I haven't seen the Dice Tower teaser. I will check it out. So where are those cards from if they are not in the xpack?

Some were pushed back to the next expansion possibly.  I believe Gravikor and the Ballista were mentioned in this regard specifically in a different thread.  Likely someone in the know will reply before I can find the link, though...

I too have the expansion and was slightly disappointed that the cards mentioned in the dice tower teaser weren't included. But its no biggie and the rest of the cards are very interesting and there are plenty of each, so as mentioned no need to buy multiple copies. I haven't had a chance to play yet but will have a few games over the weekend- both mages look quite interesting!

Folks,

I apologize for the confusion, but the cards mentioned in the Dice Tower Kickstarter video are promo cards that will be released in future sets, not in the Forcemaster vs Warlord Expansion. However, you will see them in the future, possibly with alternate artwork.

Thanks,

Ahh, well that's exciting too. Still plenty of toys in this expansion so I'm happy  ;)

It's also worth noting that the Spellbooks came in perfect condition this time. I was one of the people who had bubbles all over the place on my books in the core set, the hair dryer trick made them look much better but def not perfect. However I couldn't spot a single flaw on the expansions books, def satisfied!

Still waiting here too, but that's the usual for Alaska.  I am hoping for a delivery today to have it to play over the weekend, but it is unlikely.  "Patience grasshopper... patience."  No matter how much I say that to myself, it doesn't really help quell the expansion excitement.

Things usually take a week or two longer to get to Canada so I will be pleasantly surprised if it shows up before March 1st

Just got mine today. Everything pretty much closed early on Wednesday and didn't open yesterday. A storm front moved through and dropped 14.2 inches of snow on us. That's pretty much what we normally see in two years.

I preorderd mine from hobbytown, and ordered for multiple people, they only got one in?!?! They said it would take a week to three weeks for the rest. Not to pleased. But boy is it a great set! Tons of great new cards for every mage, the mages are balanced.(We switched around and at the end it was 2-2. So that was nice.) I would of had a comment on building new books with them, but since my group only has one copy as of now, I'm going to keep the "Starting" books as is. But I couldn't be happier. My favorite part is that it comes with plenty of each spell, so I dont fell the need to buy two at all, and the spells are really good, not better or have any kind of power shift from the core, but they different, and allow new strategies, it really gives you many more options, but not this staggering advantage to someone who doesn't have it. And the components looked great. The spell books are crisp and clean (although the hair dryer trick work perfectly for me.) I give it a 10/10 easily, surpassed what most other game expansions do and have by a long shot.(For the price especially)

Sorry to cut most of your post, but I wanted to focus on this part. I would rate the set a 9 (that's prior to playing it). The one negative for me is that for a set that includes 216 cards we got a proportionally small number of different new cards. I can't help but feel that all the extra copies of the cards is the reason we didn't get some of the cards we thought would be in the set. I hope we can find a happy median between this expansion and the core set. I may be the only person that feels this way since increasing the number of copies of individual cards in the expansion was one of the hot topics on the forum last year. If AW does keep this model for the expansions I hope they at least put in 2 copies of each Mage so that we can play the forcemaster vs forcemaster. I would hate to have to buy a second set just to get a duplicate copy of the mages.

Overall I am pleased with the expansion.

I played mine last night.

The new mages are awesome.

In the first game my buddy played the warlord, and I played the forcemaster.

I thought he was going to crush me with his obscene lineup of creatures, but I closed with him quickly and kept sucking him in with the FM's "force pull" ability, where I had an invisible stalker waiting. The FM's sword doublestrikes for 8 dice!  He didn't last.

The second game was EPIC. He began with a solid lineup of outposts that spit out a motly rabble of goblins. My Warlord was on the ropes the entire game but through careful use of fire walls was able to stymie his assault for a very close victory. There were so many twists and turns in this game that it was tense the entire time.

Such a good game.

I felt there were plenty of new cards for just one set, but you certainly are not the only person that feels that way. A good number of people feel the same way you do.(They wanted more verity of spells, but were overall pleased) It was a split for my group in who felt ether way. Honestly, I wouldnt be surprised if they had more cards that were intended to make the cut, but they wanted to try and keep the promised deadline. Being the first expansion, I'm sure they had a lot of tough decisions to make, and I bet they will keep getting better and better. As for the mirror matches, a lot of people have said that too, but anything close to that will not be an issue to me since my group all buy our own sets, but you know you can always print or photo copy the mage cards. This set really has just the right number to do two of each book with just one box.

The reason I thought that there were more spells ready to go into the set is that some of the spoiled cards were a perfect fit for this set like the Ballista. I think the Minotaur was spoiled too and isn't he being held in the forcemaster's force crush on the box cover. That doesn't mean those cards were meant for this set though, so you could be right.

Thats really where I get the I get the idea of: They intended for many more cards to be in the set, but wanted to reach there promised dead line. They probably were intended for this set, but for whatever reason, needed to be held back. I'm sure they had to make some cuts they didnt want to. With the game itself being in testing for so long...I have the felling they want to really get things right, before they get it even a little wrong. Just my thoughts.

I don't think those cards were intended to be included in the forcemaster vs warlord set.  They were simply spoiled as part of the Dicetowers kickstarter promotion.

I think the exact words used by the FLGS owner when he recieved the box was 'could kill a small child'.

Anyway, the set is astoundingly good, well worth the price tag!  We get a very cool creature-heavy caster that's a great alternative to the beastmaster, and a hilarious to use and play forcemage that keeps your opponent guessing!

Also, WTF Catapults and Outposts!? AWESOME! :D  that was probably the best and biggest surprise of this box, so i can't wait to see what other crazy tricks Arcane Wonders has up their sleeves.

One thing i have to note: Don't be a Warlord against a Warlock.  Everything you have is flammable.

We did notice that last night, though we just assumed the originals had worn down more than we thought from play.  The new ones are very shiny and very smooth!

Also:  In the three games we played last night (first ones ever with the expansion), using the preset starter books, the Forcemaster won pretty easily for everyone who played it.  While this is likely just a local play group statistic, does anyone else have simular findings?  At least with the starter books?

I got a half-game in yesterday with the Forcemaster v Warlord using the default spell books. It was slow going as it was a game of discovery and so it took a while during the Planning Phase. We only had an  hour and I lost (Warlord) with him have sustained 6 points of damage on the Forcemaster 1 point of damage. The first thing I would like to point out was I was mana starved and had a hard time getting alot of creatures out even with three outposts. I did manage to kill the Invisible Stalker, but I am chalking that up to player in-experice. I did get the warlord buffed up to +6 AC and +3 melee and had the War Sledge out. He can dish out allot of damage!!! He is a bit slow to ramp up.

Now the Forcemaster, he comes out and is hitting real hard real quick. Psylock + Force Hammer is brutal, he has the Force Blade and hit hard but thankfully is much more mana starved than I was. All of that said the tough part was the stinking Force Field. With that he as basicly auto miss on 3 attacks and a native 50/50 Defense of 7.

I think that once I had saved up and I do mean saved up enough mana to dispell his force field he would of been in trouble as I had a steady steam of creatures coming out and with my War Sledge it would of been hammer time!

I think one of the first things I would do is swap in a couple of Mana Flowers/Crystals from the default spell book build.....

We played our first game last night, and I was playing the FM.

Here's what I did:

- Thought Spores allowed me to WRECK the Warlord. I put Force Wave on one and Invisible Fist on the other. With Wave my opponent made the mistake of putting out that Wall...and I proceeded to push his soldiers through it

- Opening equipment: Dancing Scimitar and Force Ring. You've got few discounts in the starter book, so the ring helps. The Scimitar is AWESOME. At the very worst you make the Warlord waste time and mana dissolving it. It's an extra 4 dice OR a free melee defense.

- Charm. Most of the Warlords creatures are lvl 1-2, so it's cheap to slap on his goblins. The upkeep isn't all that bad either. It's also 2 range, which is nice.

- Damage Shield: It's just one more thing to stack on and stack it on you must. So that means with the Spore, 4 dice + 4 at worst with Galvitar + 4 from the Scimitar + 6 more from a Force Hammer. The answer is yes, I really did all that in one round, and I did a double strike with Galvitar, so it was 18 dice against the Warlord  ;)

I opened Spore + Ring, putting fist on that spore. Next round I Spore + Scimitar, putting push on that spore. Personally I think that's a great opening.

After playing the Forcemaster I'm curious to see the other side of things, but I REALLY like the FM. The only issue is that if you do something like the detonate on the suicide gob, it's not hard to take out the spores. I also feel like the FM is a slam or two away from getting swarmed and in a bad position as well; but the latter is what the personal shield and scimitar help you try to avoid.

I'd be curious to hear more opinions on this as well. My opponent made the mistake of getting to close to me, and I think that's a REALLY bad idea against a FM. You really want to play keep away.

Played a couple of games today. The Second was the FM (default deck) vs Warlock (Custom beatdown deck). I played the FM and won bearly. I moved accoss the board and setup two Wall of Pikes Faceing me. At the end of my non-initative phase I would Force Push him through the Wall (unless he teleported) then when I have initative pull him back to me and Dbl Striked smack him with my Blade. He played a real heavy Idol of Pestelence/Deathlock (DOT) + Mordok's Obelisk/Suppression Orb (Mana Denial). Which I made him pay dearly for as he was never able to get any other equpiment out other than his LOH. After I got him into the corner he wanted nothing more than to get out of it. He got in a couple of shots with the LOH but in reality it was the DOT that really began to hurt. I had the IS iun the corner with me along with the Dancing Scmitar. I put up the Force Field and tried to keep him from hitting me with spells. I then started beating on him and we got down to the last round with me having initative and 4 HP's left anf him having 3HP. I smacked him with a Force Hammer with my quick cast and ended the game.

All and all it was a fun hour!

I will have to say that the think I am most upset about is the lack of new Mana generation. This seems like the backbone of the game and there are only 4 different types out there. Harmonize, Moon, Flower and crystal!

And even if they did not want to make a new card with mana generation, why could they not include some more Mana Crystals/Flowers on the box set. I would love more of these cards in my collection but I really don't want to have to purchase the entire base set just to have enough of these guys to go around.

Welcome to the forums MAXedOUT! They do have  expansions called the "Core SpellTomb" and the "Core SpellTomb 2" That have just what you are looking for. You can go to the Store section of this website to view them. I got mine a bit cheeper at my FLGS.
Here is a link to the contents of the core spelltomb 2, I couldnt find a list for the first one, That would be the one that has more mana flowers/crystals, harmonize ect.

It's interesting, because the more I play this game, the more I question the value of these mana generators in every spell book (clearly they have their places in some).

I have purchased the first Core Spell Tomb and i only got 1 of each Flower, Crystal and Harmonize. I dont remember if i got a Moonglow or not. The issue im having now is that i want to use the crystals over the flower due to fire spells being very good at killing them via AOE. The only exception being my Beastmaster deck and Warlord deck only due to the Spell points involved during SpellBook construction.

Now that I have 4 Spellbooks i want to have 4 decks built at once. I could just swap them around but its a pet peeve of mine.

I agree, I dislike having to swap out as well. Im not going to complain much though, I could easily spend as much on a CCG for one year, as I could on 10 MW core sets (Not even buying packs...I learned early to never buy packs, I will say I was a tournament player though.) and would have to swap cards for two decks! (Im just saying, not implying anything)

I agree Sausageman.  For weeks, the default opening move for everyone up here was mana crystals/mana flowers.  The damn arena looked like a mana crystal farm.  Nowadays, there might be one or two on the board max.

Also, can we all agree that it's "tome" and not "tomb?"  It's a rather significant difference.   :P

Haha, Coy, that was funny. My mistake   . I don't know about only having 1 or 2 crystals. I have 4 in most of my decks. Even when I rush I end up playing 2. its just seems prudent, but I guess it could be my gaming circle. I tend to like the 10 or so turn game. I don't play ultra aggressive though, so I may be missing something.

On a side note, does anyone know what Decks won that event that MW had a few weeks back? Wondering if we were going to get some official info/deck lists ever.

A warlock build won the tournament. Piousflea posted his build here http://magewars.com/jsite/forum/spellbook-design-and-construction/7591-lord-of-terror-bashcon-beatdown-build

I have not experienced this.  I have won with the forcemaster a couple of times, but I've seen it go down it's fair share as well.  As long as players are smart to move their mages away.  The forcemaster can hack away fast with that force blade that does a 4 dice double strike as a full action.  As the prestiess I relied on a lot of heals and my creatures to do the deed.  The next game I changed up to a wizard and one very quickly, with lots of lightning attacks and a royal archer.

Great game!
