Title: Adremelech Burn Build
Post by: drmambo23 on October 13, 2015, 12:51:22 PM
So I am still getting use to building books and figuring out what will work or not.  I haven't had a chance to try this book out yet but wanted to know what your guys thoughts are and would like constructive criticism.  Thanks

Hi there! I really like this build! Ive got a few questions though, and maybe their answers will help you. First off its awesome that youre using this mage, she is a tricky one though. burns as resourses is intersting but hard to get to work.
1. I wonder why you are using the Gate to Hell. You only have 3 creatures that benefit from its buff (2 technically as i dont see you throwing punches with your familiar) and its a WHOPPING 6 SP. thats 6 curses. thats 2 more fireballs (that i think you also need), thats 4 more flame blasts and a dissolve. its sooo many other more useful things you can fill that book slot with. i tried really hard recently to make an AC Warlock who used the gate, and it got edited every time. its once a game attack is sub par at best, and expensive. It also requires a full action.

2. Im wondering if you need demonhide armor, you could same a point by just doubling up on the dragonscale. you're already running circle of fire. its nice, i just don't think its worth 2 sp.

3. I see a small issue that is wildly improbable (maybe not wildly) , but if it happens you're gonna kick yourself. You have no source of healing. So if someone pushes you through your own wall of thorns and gets you bleeding you will bleed forever. you've got no way of removing conditions at all so they can stack those bleeds or rots and you could find yourself in trouble. id maybe swap the colossus belt for a regrowth belt at least. i know you have deathlock, but you've got no walls or intercept guards so as soon as you play it the other mage has to kill it. and kill it they will.

4. im not sure if you will actually cast combustion 4 times a game. it really only pays off if there are 3 or more burns on a target, and then youre forfeiting damage over time for all the damage now X2. and with the prevelance of cards that can extinguish, and them being really cheap and quick i think you might have a tough time making that many burns stick.

5. I've seen explode be prohibitively expensive too many times to not want at least one dissolve. sometimes you just gotta get it done on the cheap, or doing two things that turn is needed.

6. It looks like you wanna stay back and set stuff on fire, which i love, and it might behoove you to grab Cloak of Shadows. Obscured is Amazing!!

7. Poisoned blood and rust are both awesome triggers for your mages abilities. maybe you dont need rust but poisoned blood would be great for this book.

like i said i like it! I think youve got a good basis here. let us know how it worked out. Also can you tell us a couple opening plans? what are you gonna do for the first 3 turns?

@RomeoXero

Thanks for the input.  I had Gate to Hell in there because I just wanted it but the more I look at the book the more I realize that your points are more valid than my reasoning lol.  I thought the attack was nice but for the 12 mana and 4 die attack it isnt worth it.

Here is the updated spell book:

Removed Gate to Hell, 1x Combustion, Demonhide Armor, Colossus Belt

Added: 1x Flameblast, 1x Poisoned Blood, 1x Dragonscale Hauberk, 1x Elemental Wand, 1x Cloak of Shadows, 1x Regrowth Belt, 1x Dissolve

As far as strategy,
T1: 19 mana - enchanters wardstone (15), move one then mana crystal (10)
T2: 20 mana - Harmonize crystal (16), deathlock (7)
T3: 18 mana - facedown and reveal adramelech's touch (15), move one, flame blast (10)
T4: 21 mana - Sersiryx (9), ignite (7)
T5: 18 mana - from here on out use ignite, combust, curses (hellfire trap and chains of agony) and let Sersiryx cast fire ball.

I would like to have a set up where I keep the opponenet busy with fire damage so that I can place a Hellfire trap behind a bloodspine wall, forcepush them through the wall and into the trap. just an idea.  Ideally this would be in the direction away from my mage so that I can keep pushing burn tokens from a distance.

Is this set up slow? Does it need to be faster?  I haven't had a chance to play this book yet but I look forward to it.  Thanks for the input!

It is not possible to harmonize a Mana Crystal, because Harmonize can only be used in combination with targets that have their own mana channeling (that can save mana on them: Mage, Spawnpoints, Familiars). Mana Crystal just increases the Mages Mana channeling.

Combustion is only used if it has enough burns (3+) on it AND when it would finish the creature off. This is pretty situational.. I'd put 1 in the book en remove the other 2. Maybe use flameblasts instead?

This is not really a must, but I would also change 1 hellion into another demon. They are pretty squeeshy. I can imagine a mid-game summoned one is focussed down before he can do anything. Maybe a [mwcard=MW1C03]Dark Pact Slayer[/mwcard]? I know he does not have the flame attack but in some situations the piercing and his extra life just make the difference. Also, some things have flame -2/ flame immunity, you'd want something for that.

I also wonder if you've had decent succes with the hellfire trap? I'm not able to pull it off.

Since you are that much focussed on burns, maybe put in another adra. touch? 2 is not bad though.

Why the bloodspine wall and not the wall of fire? For the LOS? Maybe also include some walls of bones. A wall in the right spot can be epic.

T3: 18 mana - facedown and reveal adramelech's touch (15), move one, flame blast (10)

T5: 18 mana - from here on out use ignite, combust, curses (hellfire trap and chains of agony) and let Sersiryx cast fire ball.

There are several plays which could be improved upon imo.

Unless you go heavy on curses, Enchanter's Wardstone is not a good opening move for your book imo. It costs you 4 mana and an action and if your opponent does not dispel your enchantments it does absolutely nothing at all.
Chains of Agony is certainly a card that I've never seen trigger a Dispel.
Moreover by playing this card so early without any guarantee you'll get anything positive from it, you put yourself behind 4 mana and an action from the get go.

2 Curses which I find absolutely vital to the Adramelech Warlock are Enfeeble and Agony ( I use 3 of each )
I see only 1 Agony which is far too few imo.

Deathlock on R2 is another very dubious play. Keep in mind your Warlock cannot heal anymore either, so you put yourself in a tough spot if your opponent hits you hard and deals more damage to you than you to him.
Better to reserve this card for a later turn when you have already gotten the upper hand damage wise.
One time I can see this coming out relatively early is against a Druid and her regenerating plants but otherwise I would advise caution before bringing this out.

As has been mentioned already, you can't put Harmonize on a Crystal.
The Harmonize is not really necessary in this book.

Going Flameblast on R3 ( thus range 0-1 ) puts you real close to the opposition and since you have no armor at all at that point you could be in for a rude awakening.

Waiting until R4 to summon Sersiryx and put him into play undefended right under the opposition's nose is a catastrophy in the making imo.
Better to summon him on R1, let him accumulate some mana and be very cautious with him.

I don't know if you have used Ignite yet but it's not so simple. If there's already a Burn counter on the opposing Mage you can't use Ignite on him anymore, unless you put the Burn counter on another creature in the opposing Mage's zone and then move the counter with the Warlock's Fireweaving ability.
However, if your opponent does not play any creatures of his own or they are not in his zone your Ignites are useless, unless you can use a creature of your own to play them on and then transfer them onto the other Mage, but ...
Sersiryx is not a creature you want in that spot as I already mentioned, the Hellions are immune to fire spells and the Wraith is Incorporeal and thus has the Burnproof trait iirc, so none of your creatures is suitable for that role.
You will likely be left with a lot of unusable Ignites.

Combustion : 1 copy should be more than enough. I took it out as I never used it anyway.

Overall, the things the book seems to be missing the most imo :
- more burn spells
- Hawkeye(s)
- Enfeeble and Agony
- Battle Forge ( better let the Forge put Leather Boots/Gloves on you than waste an action on a Rhino Hide )

You might get trouble with Wall of Earth. Currently your only ways to get past one are Acid Ball on an Elemental Wand and the Grey Wrath. If you get walled in, it takes you some time to get out. You could go for Eagleclaw Boots, the already mentioned Dark Pact Slayer or something like a Force Hammer.

Here is a new opening I thought of.  Is this one efficient or no?

Turn 1:
19 mana
Move one then Battle Forge (11), Mana Crystal (6)
Turn 2:
16 mana + 1 Battleforge - 17
Deploy leather gloves on BF (15), QC fd Hellfire Trap one to two zones away (13), Chains of Agony and reveal (10) if creature is close enough
Turn 3:
20 mana + 1 BF – 21
Deploy leather boots from BF (19), QC fd Adramelec’s Touch (17), move then Ignite on self and move to enemy with fireweaving (15)
Turn 4:
25 mana +1 BF – 26
Deploy cloak of shadows from BF (20), QC poisoned blood and reveal (17), Flaming Hellion (4)
Turn 5:
14 mana + 1 BF – 15
Deploy elemental wand (10) – bind fireball, QC akiro’s favor fd (8 ), attack with flaming hellion, move mage and attack with fireball (0). Move burn tokens

Maybe try sersyrix out a few times to see if he works out for you. If he doesn't you can always remove him, but I do agree that you should . The wildfire imp is DEF. worth his mana but not always his full action. Not sure if you should use him in this book. A better one could be the lvl 2 demon?

Personal taste: add 1-2 surging waves, eagleclaw boots, zone attack spells.

But you can def. work with what you already have!  ;D

Thanks! yeah, I think I will try to throw eagle claw boots in somehow. Just not sure what to take out. Possibly veterans belt? idk
And are you saying that you agree that I should try him or should leave him out?

Also, I wasn't sure to go with the Firebrand Imp or the Wildfire Imp.  I decided on the wildfire because of the burn conditions doing melee +2.  I guess the Firebrand Imp would be better off since his attack can cause burn and is more dice with no buffs.

A note ahead of time: A lot of this advice is my preference and experience, so take it how you will. Yours may be somewhat different

Quote
Also, I wasn't sure to go with the Firebrand Imp or the Wildfire Imp.  I decided on the wildfire because of the burn conditions doing melee +2.  I guess the Firebrand Imp would be better off since his attack can cause burn and is more dice with no buffs.

-Of the two, I prefer Firebrand imps since you can buff their attack with your curses (Marked For Death gives them a 4 dice attack while the other curses would make it 3 dice. (smoldering curses gives the opponent flame +1))

- One thing you might want to think about is how you see yourself doing the majority of your damage. If it's through your curses and burns with direct damage then you'll probably need more ghoul rots. If it's through attack spells, you're going to run out of gas way too fast. I prefer a lot more attack spells, personally.

- You could also go the creature beatdown route, but you need more heavy hitters like the Dark Pact Slayers

- Grey Wraith is an interesting idea, one that I have not tried. Let me know how that goes for you.

- I have never been a fan of Sersiryx. I've tried :(

- I kind of view the wall push as a gimmick, but if you can get it to work then feel free. Personally not a fan and think you'd be better off spending those SBP elsewhere.

- You can play the cute jinx/nullify game, but I've never been a fan of it either. It's not what I consider to be a good style play  for either warlock. If you want to keep them, I'd suggest lowering it to 1 each or 2 of one.

- Maim wings is a curse I'd either suggest to run multiples or don't bother. Your attack spells and a lash will both hit flying creatures

- Add a lash for a back up plan. See Maim Wings comment

- From what I can tell, there are two schools of thought on the Elemental Wand in an Adramelech Warlock book. 1: Have enough wands to still have one after the others have been dissolved. 2: Run enough attack spells that you don't need a wand. I subscribe to the latter.

- Banish costs a lot in terms of SBP and mana. My thoughts are that if you're going to banish something, you might as well ignore it or burn it to the ground.

- I'd also add a ring of curses if you're going to curse your opponent more than twice (by the looks of it you are)

Openings:
-It's super rare to be casting a curse on turn 2. I'd probably change your turn 2 to Hawkeye + Akiro's favor instead (Brace yourself is another good option along with Circle of Fire if you are planning on being in Melee)
-What's the point of your cloak if you're going to be basically in melee combat by turn 4? I find the cloak useful for drawing the enemy to you and for avoiding things like wizard's towers, and other ranged conjurations.

And that's all I notice right now. Let me know how playing with the book goes :)

- Forgot one thing: Enfeeble. Enfeeble Enfeeble. Oh, did I mention Enfeeble? It's a FANTASTIC curse. Fan. Tastic. I'd probably bump to 2 or 3.

- I'll disagree with Borg about Agony, but that's just me.

- I'll disagree with Borg about Agony, but that's just me.

Why I like Agony for her :

With about 2-4 Armor ( Boots/Gloves & armor ) in place putting a 4 mana Agony ( Curse Ring ) on a 4+ attack dice creature can take a lot of sting out of that creature for a small fraction of the creature's cost so you can focus down the enemy mage and not worry too much about that creature taking a swing at you.

Zombie Brutes especially come to mind. Enfeeble is great on them ... until the Necromancer casts Zombie Frenzy ;) I prefer Agony there ever since.

Here is another edit to the book.  The main idea is to set up traps, force push them into the traps to position them where I need to or to damage and burn.  Also, if they get rid of the trap then that is an action wasted on them because I will also be trying to curse the heck out of them from a distance.  I also threw a decoy in the deck to put in a zone to bait a seeking dispel or to have board control with the opponent move around it.  I'll have the Dark Pact Slayer as a heavy hitter.  I also added 2 mage wands to put ignite on so that I can keep pumping out the burn markers.

I;m not sure if I like this edit better than the last.  If this one does not play well then I'll just go with the update before this one.

Did you consider including the Devil's Trident attack spell?

It has a high 50% chance of Cripple which can help pin an opponent and give you time to maneuver or close in for the kill with your DP Slayer.

As a strategy Push books work for a bit and then [mwcard=MWSTX1CKQ06]Eagleclaw Boots[/mwcard] come into play and then you spend time on Dissolves and soon your strategy is in tatters, so make sure that you plan to shift to some other strategy (or start with a different and shift to this one mid-game) once your opponents wise up.

The main idea is to set up traps, force push them into the traps to position them where I need to or to damage and burn.

I don't understand ... you have only two Hellfire Traps and only one Teleport Trap.
That main idea is not going to last long and will most certainly not be enough to finish an opponent.
If you really want to focus on Traps I suggest you make that 6 Hellfire Traps.

... if they get rid of the trap then that is an action wasted on them because I will also be trying to curse the heck out of them from a distance.

It's not really a wasted action on their part because you have used an action to put the Trap out as well, so it's a break even.

I also added 2 mage wands to put ignite on so that I can keep pumping out the burn markers.

As I already mentioned, keep in mind that once there are Burn counters on a creature you can't directly add more Burn counters with Ignite to that creature, you'll have to do that with your Fireweaving ability.
In practice it's often more difficult to achieve than first assumed as timing plays an important role and it often forces you to activate your creatures in an order you don't necessarily find ideal.

Yeah, I am going to stick with the previous build and avoid the traps.  I really want to put gravikor in this build and use my mage from a distance with gravikor, cloak of shadows, ignite, and curses.

I think the idea of a board control deck with many traps and walls would be an interesting idea.

Also, with ignite, I would put it on a wand, ignite myself then at the end of my action transfer it to a new target so I would not receive the damage on upkeep.  If i continue to do that then I can always get a burn since I will always transfer what I have leaving me with no burns

Yes, but you would have to be in the same zone as your target to do that and you said you wanted to apply a ranged, obscured, cursing strategy. Both strategies contradict each other.

I have been misreading that card this whole time  :P

I understood it as I could transfer a burn marker to a target up to 2 zones away.  I see now...back to the drawing board.

Ok, so after taking your guys input and watching and playing a few games of my own I have come up with this build which is less set up and traps and more offense.  I think this will work better but I have yet to try it out.

I might swap the third teleport for something else after some play testing.
