Winter Mage War 2 in Champaign, IL on Saturday, January 26th.
Information about Winter War Gaming Convention - https://www.winterwar.org/ (https://www.winterwar.org/) There is usually plenty of parking and there are plenty of places to eat in the area. The convention runs from Friday through Sunday, and we registered for a Saturday tournament.
Overview
- Looking forward to a great Mage Wars Arena Tournament.
- We have room for up to 16 players in the tournament.
- The tournament will be played in two stages. The first stage will be a round robin with two groups. The numbers in each group will be determined by the number of participants.
- The top two players from each group will advance to round two. In the case of a tie (see points below), head-to-head results will be used. If we are unable to get enough games in for the two to have played head-to-head, the total wins and losses of opponents will be used to break the tie. The highest rated player from group 1 will play the lowest rated player from group 2 and vice versa in the semi-final round.
- Each game will last 90 minutes. Any turn started after 85 minutes which provides that both players have had an equal number of initiatives will be considered the last turn.
- A win by defeating the opposing mage will count as 2 points. A win by having more remaining health than the opposing mage will count as 1 point. If both mages have the same remaining health after the last turn as described in the previous point then two additional turns will be allowed. If both mages still have the same remaining health, it is a tie with 0 points awarded.
Ruleset
- Players will build a spellbook with the standard amount of spellbook points and restrictions. Spellbooks will be reviewed prior to the start of the tournament.
- Any promotional cards that have been officially released in a set will be considered to read as the official released version. Only cards (or their promotional counterparts) that have been officially released are allowed.
- The rulebook and codex (4.2) will be used with the following listed restrictions or modifications.
- At the moment, new cards due for release before Winter War and pre-released at GenCon2018 will be allowed, including swarms, however decks will be limited to no more than 2 swarm cards (e.g. you could have 2 bees but not 3). This is subject to change but we really want to provide a test bed for these new cards if possible.
- Disciple of Radiance Text Change - Once per round, whenever your Mage casts or reveals a healing spell, Disciple of Radiance may deal 1 direct light damage to a target creature in her zone
- Steep hill will block Line of Sight if you cast a spell and it goes through two diagonal sections of the zone
- Force Pull - Once per round, the Forcemaster may cast this quick Force spell. Target creature is Pushed 1 zone towards the source of this spell. It will not Push a creature through a wall with the Passage Attacks trait.
- If a flying creature attacks a non-flying creature, it loses flying until the end of the attack and any counterattacks.
That's all I can think of right now. I'll post an update as I know more. We really hope you can make it if you are in the area.
-
How are you handling the different rules between Academy and Arena? For example,
Will Breeches equipment be allowed? Arena does not have a Breeches slot for Equipment spells.
What definition of Pest will be in play? Arena and Academy have different definitions for this trait.
The complete interaction of rules might be useful to specify for tournament play since the published Codex and current Rules Supplement don't seem to address all rules interactions.
-
I think Restore need fixing.
-
and consider the siren. given the tie breaker, siren is at a huge disadvantage.
-
I will double check with Virgel. we talked earlier about keeping it the same as gencon rules wise with scoring points. A win resulting in opponent death is 2 points. No deaths equal a tie and 1 point awarded to each player.
As far as academy to arena rules we are keeping a similar format and rules from last gencon and incorporating the same rule changes from the current ADMW tournament. No promos allowed, Unless released in a set.
Academy cards work fine with arena except the select few ADMW has pointed out. As far as pest trait we are keeping the standard ruling from the Arena codex. Breeches slot is fine and translates to arena okay imo.
We are working on swarm trait ruling for the tournament. They maybe subject to change.
I think that is all. Super pumped for second year to have a tournament here! Let us know if you are planning on attending. We have 3 newer players here that VictorE and I are training so we should have more players participating this year!
-
I'm going to see if I can come compete. Is crash space available? :)
-
Yea definitely anyone wanting to go to winter war they can crash at my place. Just PM me if you think you plan on staying the day before or day of the tourny. I have a couch and a couple sparebeds If we have more you might want to bring a blow up mattress or a sleeping bag. If we have a good turn out and people want to game the night before or day after I could get some plastic tables and we could Mage wars it up at the house too!!!
-
Sound like I need to go!! 8)
-
I am planning on making it to defend my title. :)
-
I might be able to make it. I'll know in December. Either way looks fun!
-
Do you have space or dose 16 fill fast, I will have vacation back and me and frI end of mine would head south to play
-
no need to be in a rush. Last year I don’t think everyone registered until late November. I think we could see the tournament fill up this year. if that is the case both VictorE and I would just be Judges and sit out. Or depending on space we could expand it. I will have to check with VoctorE tho. I know we have a good amount of people going to Indy in a few weeks so it could be gauge on how many could be joining us at Winter War!!!

I was wondering how you can Judge and participate in the same tournament? Don't you get an unfair advantage when you check each player's spellbook before play starts?
-
Yea that would not happen. This year I believe I am judging and Virgel is participating. In case there is too many players both of us would sit out and judge. We never had a judge Particpate in a tournament and we will never have that happen in the future. Good question sorry for any confusion.

Thanks. I was hoping you had a good solution, since I find myself wanting to play in tournaments I run too. :)
Checking the physical spellbooks still seems like the best approach for a judge at this point.
-
I officially am the first registered for Winter Mage War 2. See you all there!
-
Sweet Dave!!! Can’t wait!!!! Glad u can make it. Again for people staying out of town I will provide my basement. It is finished and carpeted. One bed available. Bring air mattresses and sleeping bags if u want to stay he night. We can play mage wars Friday or Sunday as well. I will set up some tables and chairs.
-
I am planning on making it. might take you up on the offer for the space too. we can decide as we get closer. dave and I can carpool over. I think also may bring another too. will keep you up to date as I know more.

I am going to get a room at the hotel, if I can... I planned other events Friday and later Saturday night.
-
Hey... the Net says that the Hawthorn Suites are permanently closed... where is this being held again?
Seems strange that I signed up for it, and didn't even notice where it was....
-
Hey... the Net says that the Hawthorn Suites are permanently closed... where is this being held again?
I just found the note on the WW site that notes that the hotel will be open again in time for the con... you just have to call them to reserve a room since there is no web site to use to do so.
-
Just a heads up that registration is now open for Winter War. https://www.winterwar.org/
-
The Hawthorn Suites are located at 101 Trade Center Drive, Champaign, IL 61820, and can be reached by phone at (217) 398-3400. Mention that you are attending Winter War to learn about the convention room discount! This is the location of the event.
There are lots of other hotels in town though for booking rooms if needed. According to the Winter War website, Hotel Update
The Hawthorne Suites are still undergoing renovation, but will be ready for us in time for the convention, so no worries there. They don't currently have a website for you to book through, so if you want to reserve your room, please make sure to call them. You can find the phone number listed below.
I thought that it was becoming a Holiday Inn though. I'm not 100% confident that it is still Hawthorne Suites, It shows up on IHG (which is Holiday Inn I think). I talked to Susan though (one of the organizers) and the number is supposed to work for reservations at least.

Have fun guys. Hope to see some footage from the event
-
with cohsade coming, I think that is a real possibility.
-
Looking forward to Winter War!!! Less than two weeks away. We have four registered but I know a lot of people register and signup when they get there. I think we have 10-12 if everyone that says they are competing join us.
We will game it up Friday night and Saturday after the event too if you stay the night at my place. I have more room for people to Stay because my wife and kiddos are going on a trip that same weekend.
So let’s mage wars it up fellows!!!
-
super stoked about the event too.

Hey everyone,
Really looking forward to a great Winter Mage War 2. We've been working on books here in central Illinois, but I will not be playing, just judging.
I think Farkas already posted most of the information about the game play. The only additions are that we will try to have a 3rd/4th place match as well. The first round will be mostly random, but we try to let people play people that are not from their area, just so you get some games in with new players if possible. Otherwise, the only rules modifications are the same as ADMW. No promos. Any other cards out, including Academy are allowed. So expect some wands of fire and ice, maybe a bee or two too. You play one book for the whole tournament (unlike ADMW). There will be a sheet to write out your book to check the spellbook points. The actual event URL is https://www.winterwar.org/events/event/2328. We are supposed to have 4 tables, which should allow for 8 games at a time if they are the same tables from last year.
I picked up trophies for first and second last week. Funny thing there, I ordered them in 2018, so guess what year I put on the trophies. Still, we have trophies and a few prizes!
We usually have the tables most of the weekend, not just during out time, so there may be time for some fun games, maybe some domination. So bring more than just your tournament book. We played a couple of late games last year. Plus, there are a lot of other games going on. It's no GenCon, but it's surprising large.
Best,
V

Can someone elaborate on what ADMW rules are? The only thing I saw mentioned was about Disciple of Radiance.

Disciple of Radiance Text Change
- Once per round, whenever your Mage casts or reveals a healing spell, Disciple of Radiance may deal 1 direct light damage to a target creature in her zone
Casting a Spell - Change to the end of the Pay Costs Step
- Previous wording - If you cannot pay all of the costs, the spell is cancelled and discarded, and you have lost the action.
New wording -If you cannot pay all of the costs, the spell is cancelled and obliterated, and you have lost the action.
Everything else remains unchanged about the step
Steep Hill
- Steep hill will block Line of Sight if you cast a spell and it goes through two diagonal sections of the zone.
Force Pull
- Once per round, the Forcemaster may cast this quick Force spell. Target creature is Pushed 1 zone towards the source of this spell. Will not Push a creature through a wall with the Passage Attacks trait.
Trample
- - If a Flying creature attacks a non-Flying object, it loses Flying until the end of the attack.
- Elusive Creatures can ignore guards when making a Trample Attack
- Defenses that do not work against Melee attacks cannot be used during the Avoid Attack step, however all other types may be (choosing one during the step following normal rules).
In my horrible Forum abilities, I give you a quote from the ADMW2 Open page. Hope it helps!

Thanks for the quick assist. I am curious now... what is the difference between discarding and obliterating a spell?
If such a spell is bound to an object, does it become lost under these rules? Is the object that it is bound to affected at all?

Obliterated spells don't go to your discard pile. I assume this is to avoid shenanigans with Resurrection/Animate Dead to bring back a creature that was never in play.
I don't quite understand the Steep Hill clarification. What are "two diagonal sections of a zone"? Would this mean "two adjacent (orthogonal) edges of a zone?" e.g. would apply to a Range 3 spell that's "up 2 / over 1" or similar?
-
iNano78 is correct. Under the "discard" system you could attempt to cast Adramelech on the first turn and "oops, I don't have enough mana". Next turn Animate Dead for half cost.
As for Steep Hill, it was pointed out that the rules only have it block line of sight through edges and not corners. Therefore anything that could target through opposite corners of Steep Hill's zone was technically not blocked by Steep Hill's rules. Minor quibble, hardly ever comes up, but just in case...we clarified.

Thanks everyone!

Wow. Just... wow.

So it would have to be like a range four effect, from the corner zone to the hill to the opposite corner zone. That makes sense... though I can't think of anything that might make use of the ambiguity.

There are a handful of effects that require line of sight with no range restriction, like a Druid using a vine marker's zone as the target of a Vine spell, effectively bypassing the spell's range restriction. So rules as written, one could argue that perfectly diagonally across Steep Hill corner-to-corner had "tunnels" in an X that allowed LoS even though any other direction across Steep Hill (+) was opaque. Huh, never thought of anybody trying to argue that.

Thanks for arranging the great fun for us this year.

Results are in. First, we all had a lot of fun at this year's Winter Mage War (complete with snow this year). Many of us played for fun the day before and into the night after the event. We look forward to seeing more players next year.
1st - Stanyer playing a Wizard with a record of L W W W, taking the tie breaker against Farkas.
2nd - Farkas playing a Druid with a record of W W W L, taking the tie breaker against Zot.
3rd - Zot playing an Ax Warlock with a record of W W L W
4th - JBuzz playing a SW Beastmaster
5th Tie between
-- DaveW playing a Wizard
-- Pudding playing a Siren
7th Tie with the same record and a tie head-to-head
-- Brian C playing a Siren
-- Brian R playing a Forcemaster
Interesting Stats
- No one ended udefeated
- Two mages ran bee swarms, but no one ran 4 of them. I'll leave it to the mages who played them to let you know how they felt it went.
- Three games of 16 were ties due to time.
- We had one player who just learned how to play. The slower play led to two ties, but did not effect the final top outcomes. We were very pleased to see a new player at the event.
- We had players from Wisconsin, Missouri, Indiana, and Illinois
My thanks again to everyone who was able to make it.
-
thanks for hosting and running the event. thanks to all who made it. it was a great time. there were many who wanted to come but were not able due to life insisting on something else. congrats to stanyer for his win, and to farkas on second place finish.

Force Pull
- Once per round, the Forcemaster may cast this quick Force spell. Target creature is Pushed 1 zone towards the source of this spell. Will not Push a creature through a wall with the Passage Attacks trait.
I know the question it's trying to answer, but I'm still not clear which way this wording falls...
Would it pull towards the FM or the Minds Eye?

If Mind's Eye is the source of the spell, then this ruling above makes it push towards Mind's Eye. See Mind's Eye text attached, which state's it becomes "the source of the spell."
As written on the Forcemaster's card, it pushes towards "her" = the Forcemaster who cast the spell (identified as "she" earlier in the card text).
-
Agreed, I know the arguments both ways (and have weighed in on which I think it should be), but as expressed above, it wasn't clear to me.
In fact, I agree I think it ought to pull towards Minds Eye, but Zuberi disagrees, which I expected to be the basis of any temporary ruling.
