General Discussion / Re: Domination - first Sslak wins?
« on: March 24, 2016, 09:44:59 PM »
We generally only play Domination with more than 2 Mages.

(3+): Free-for-All
Everything works pretty well as printed, including Galaxus.  Getting an early lead is suicide, so the trick is to stay with the pack until you are in a position to win.

(4+, even): Teams
We have been using Immortal Mages, killing team gains 1 V'tarr from the defeated team.  This one we have a few house rules to keep the balance;  1. No Galaxus.  2. Warlords not allowed to be teammates with each other.

Rules Discussion / A couple questions regarding Vines
« on: March 21, 2016, 02:13:50 PM »
(Old thread on Elusive suggested I create a new thread when replying.)

1. Since Vine growth ignores LOS, does this mean Walls do not hinder Vine placement?

2. Has the interaction of Vines and Elusive been revisited?  Do Vines still Hinder creatures with Elusive?

Thanks.

Alternative Play / Re: Team Domination, Immortal Mages
« on: March 20, 2016, 11:03:46 AM »
Our first 2 vs. 2 featured:

Team One - a Lighting Wizard & a Druid.
Team Two - a Warlock & a Warlord.
11 V'tarr to win.

Team Two got out to a 8-0 V'tarr lead (!), as Team One spent it's time building-up early. Team One then pushed forward and took all 3 claimed V'tarr Orbs.

The Warlock then managed to kill the Wizard, bringing them up to 9.    The Wizard lost 16 mana worth of equipment (along with a Teleport that was Spellbound), and a whole turn (both Quickcast & Full Action).  This wasn't quite as bad as it sounds as some of the Equipment wasn't really needed at that point in the game (like the Arcane Ring).  He spent his next turn summoning new Equipment, so he effectively lost two turns.  Still, Team 2 was unable to reclaim an orb and lost.

Some debate about the first try, because Team One won even with a Mage killed, 11-9.  Still, losing 2 turns along with all your Equipment and the two-point-V'tarr-swing seem like a pretty good benefit/penalty, but the severity depends on the Mage who dies.

We debated briefly about whether the killed Mage should come back in the same Zone, or return to their starting Zone.  We decided to leave it as-is until we played a few more games, because the Wizard would have actually been better off if he was returned to his Starting position, but it is easy to imagine circumstance where the opposite would be true.  Maybe we will let the "killer" decide in the future?

I'll post again next weekend.

Can Malaki use his Burn Token placement ability when casting an Attack Spell, such as Pillar of Light?

Alternative Play / Team Domination, Immortal Mages
« on: March 13, 2016, 09:27:55 PM »
This week we are trying a 2 vs. 2 variant of Domination.

1. All standard Team rules in effect.
2. All standard Domination rules in effect.
3. Undying Mages in effect (variant version).
4. A team that "kills" a Mage receives one of their team's V'tarr in transfer.  If they have zero, take one from the box instead.

Why do this?

When playing Teams & Domination, we often have 1 Mage killed, which leaves that player sitting idle for the remainder of the game (which is less fun than playing for us).  Further, it is not uncommon for the team losing a Mage to eventually win anyway.  This variant both keeps all the players involved for the entire game, and discourages using one Mage as a "sacrifice"/ rewards the team for defeating a Mage.

I'll post any notes or observations after a couple plays.  Feel free to let me know if you have tried this or something very similar.

Rules Discussion / Re: Vines and Obscured
« on: March 12, 2016, 05:24:17 PM »
OK, I think it is clear.

1. The Vine Marker is the source of the spell/action for the Obscured context.
2. Vine Markers can only be used to target their own Zone and it's contents.

Another spin-off question, if you will:

Must the Druid actually "target" the Vine Marker?

For example, if the Vine Marker is in the Ethereal Tile, can it then be utilized to Cast Stranglevine on a creature within the Tile (or any eligible spell) ... or is this not possible because the Druid can not Target her own Vine Marker (assuming the Druid is not adjacent)?  No?

Thanks to all for their contributions.

It's not a question of the LOS we are concerned with, it's a matter of where the spell is considered being cast from.

Obscured states "It cannot be targeted from more than one zone away", the question is how does this interact with Vine Markers only one Zone away?

For example, if the Druid 4 Zones away uses a Vine Marker adjacent to an Obscured Zone, such as the Ethereal Mist tile, can a Stranglevine target a creature in that Zone?

Is the Vine Marker considered the Casting location (as it is adjacent and thereby eligible to cast), or the Druid (which is NOT adjacent)?

Also, has it been errata somewhere to state Obscured blocks LOS?  The Druid Vs. Necromancer booklet doesn't state this.  Are Obscured objects treated like Walls now?

Rules Discussion / Vines and Obscured

It's Friday, so time for Mage Wars questions from yours truly.

Can a Druid cast into an Obscured Zone via Vines, or must the Caster actually be adjacent?

Thanks!

Can you Guard an Orb with one of your Creatures?

What if the Orb is unclaimed?

Thanks again.

If a Minor Creature is Guarding, and hit with an melee attack that Staggers it, does it get a Counterstrike?

Rules Discussion / Flying, LOS, & Unmoveable
« on: March 04, 2016, 03:01:06 PM »
A couple questions:

1. Does Flying grant LOS to Zones behind (adjacent) and or beyond, Walls?  I believe the rulebook only mentions other Flying Creatures.  Apologies if I am overlooking the relevant part.

2. Can a Flying Creature be Unmoveable at the same time?

Thanks in advance.

Rules Discussion / Guard, Taunt, & Sweep
« on: February 25, 2016, 03:05:40 PM »
Situation:

Creature with Sweep has Power Strike and a Taunt marker (from Sosruko) on him, and occupies the Zone with the Ferret and another enemy.

Questions regarding interactions and Attack Actions:

1. When he Sweeps, must the Ferret be the first target, or just one of the two targets?

2. If the Ferret IS targeted first, and succeeds at the Defense roll, are the +2 Melee dice from Power Strike lost, or do they simply move over to the second attack?

3. If the other target has a Guard token, how does the situation change?

4. What is the air speed velocity of an unladen swallow?

Appreciate it.
