Spells / Re: Several suggestions for change
« on: October 13, 2014, 04:08:38 PM »
Hi buddies, the other day i have a fight with my warlocck vs. priest, and we talked about several possibles mistakes in the game:

-Vampiric enchantment.
-I think that all people knows what is a vampire, he bites , he steal live with his fangs etc.etc...etc..., i thing it´s very , ridiculous that a mage with a weapon gain benefits of vampiric trait, maybe it´s better put in the text "melee attack without weapons or equipment"

-About heal:
In Many Rol Games, normally when a priests or a sorcerer, use they heal spells, they can wound demons and nonliving creatures, maybe a rule with " if a creature have the demon type he suffer damage indeed heals of spells", because i believe it´s very ridicoluis when i used in my last game a heal spell for my Adramalech , maybe dark creatures would be his own type of heal, as a dark pact or similar according with his thematic.

Thoughs?

Thanks-

While it is an item rather than an enchantment, in old school early d&d there was a ring of vampiric regeneration.  And it worked nearly identically to the enchantment. You gained healing from dealing melee damage with a weapon of any kind.

Strategy and Tactics / Re: The fabled Watergate Wizard

Warlock can use Enchantment Transfusion, too, remember.

If the Wizard is really dedicated to having Nullify on at all times, the Warlock can instead curse his or her own Demon, and then Enchantment Transfusion those curses over to the Wizard. Doing this won't trigger the Wizard's Nullify.

And if the Warlock is clever, one of the enchantments Transfused onto the Wizard will be a Nullify cast by the Warlock, to counter the Purge Magic / Purify that the Wizard will have prepared.

And then if the Wizard is clever, they'll have Destroy Magic available instead.

And then if the Warlock is clever.... You can see how this goes.

Clearly I cannot choose the cup in front of me...

We will simply have disagree. The only thing i can say to convince you otherwise is mana/dice ratio...

You are very correct. I was thinking of the book containing grizzlies. I felt that was a fair amount of wasted spell points. Eventually I think he ended up changing it.

Of course for fun casual play it would be enteraining to drop things like that on an unsuspecting opponent.

I think the water wizard is not quite viable yet. I suspect after pvs drops that would likely change presuming there would be some additional water spells or perhaps creatures.

In my area we build our own books and do not copy from online. So there is no watergate play going on. I play against Steve who won last years Origins and Gencon, plus some other decent players.

Charmyna eventually turned it into Blasting Banker, I think, because of Acid Ball.

If you were interested in playing Watergate these days, there isn't much in Forged in Fire to help you out, as far as I know, other than Rust, and that points more toward BB, same as Acid Ball did. Defend and Brace Yourself are novice, so those are options, too. Akiro's Favor isn't terrible with Surging Wave, but it costs 2 spellbook points, and that's not how WW wants to play.

i do not have such an interest. i felt then and still do, that running out of school creatures is not the best way to run a wizard. better to save spell points for other things rather than waste them on novelties. though i am sure to get negative feedback for that opinion.

I kept thinking my nightmare matchup would be a 100% aggressive mage who just ran at me and then unleashed a stream of Fireballs, Explodes, and Hurl Boulders.  Any mage who could convert their first 46-50 mana (4 turns) into 36+ damage is scary, and will easily beat the rate the falcons can kill someone even with punching backup from a Beastmaster.  (Falcons can't kill until the end of turn 4, where this hypothetical aggressive mage would probably kill at the beginning of turn 4.)
"

Which is why i mentioned that i would have liked a matchup against you. Alas, I made a huge mental error against Nick in round 2. Of course easy to say in hindsight. Otherwise you might have had your nightmare scenario. In fact, that is exactly the same way I should have played against Nick. Bad misjudgement on my part.

Have you tried running without the battle forge? I have found that helps. Then make sure to summon some creatures to help with actions. The walls can be a delay tactic, but mana is always tight for this mage. Mana generators early help with that. Not casting the forge saves mana, but is counter intuitive to say it also saves actions. It takes several pieces of equipment to get the value out of the forge. I think you need minimum of 4 before you see any benefit from casting the forge initially. From there you start to gain. The dwarf may only have only a few more than this in his book, and casting these pieces also take up mana, albeit with the one discount of the forge. So why not bypass the forge and save spell book points, and cast creatures instead?

Wow, someone has their panties in a twist.

Not at all. I have had this opinion since I began playing in tournements. I feel one of the major downfalls of mtg is the rampant netdecking. When you go to a mtg tourney and see the same thing over and over, how boring.

I want to face what my opponent thinks is a winning strategy, not what I think is. The game will determine who is more correct in that situation specifically. I never lent my mtg decks out back then either. I did not want to face my decks, but rather my opponents. I want to see their surprise tactic, or combo, or superior play they may have come up with and react accordingly. Did I have something in my design to handle it?

Not sure why you assumed a negative here.

Spellbook Design and Construction / Re: Forcemaster...Could it works?
« on: August 21, 2014, 02:45:17 PM »
You might want to consider a force wave too. Against a zombie or other swarm it could keep a group off of you for another round. And if you manage to push a group into a wall, they all get additional dice - for 5 mana. Would be situational, but might help. The updated version looks much better too. Good mix of agression and defense.

One of the worst matchups you can have is going against surging wave. It shuts down the defenses because it incapacitates. You might want to consider a way to remove daze/slam - such as a wand of healing. And the wand can also help get rid of other conditions such as weak (which hampers your ability to pound on folks). A purify can help there too in case they get other poison conditions/enchantments on you.

Ultimately I went down in the first round of the Finals to Tim's Earth Wizard by being too aggressive. The life advantage was mine for most of the game due to Sunfire and there was a point that I should have backed off and recharged. I had him Force Crushed but he had his tower right next door and a renewing spring to take off the corrodes I was putting on with my Devouring Jelly. I was mana starved due to the Crush so should have backed up out of range of the tower and recharged, then had him come to me or finish him off with more mana. Ultimately I failed about 3-4 Defense rolls at the end and was crushed with a boulder on Turn 16/17. Very sad.

It was a good game though. It was getting close to time, and we were both hurt. I was pretty pleased to see so many forcemasters being played. It is my second favorite mage to play. You played pretty good considering it was your first tournement. Hope to see you again next year.

Anybody that wants to post books can but if you wait I will do the t8 tonight

Please withhold mine from being posted. I would rather not contribute to netdecking spell books. Thanks.

After the lists publication, perhaps the top 8 players may give a quick rundown of MVP creature/spell and Best Plays, for their books  ;) Not asking for a primer here, just a few tips.

I badly misplayed against Nick on the second round of the tourney match. I could play my book one of 2 ways, and chose poorly, which played into his long game strength. As a result, I lost before even getting going. It went to time, and had I chose to play correctly, who knows how it would have went. I would have like my matchup against the beast master.

Anyway congrats to Alex. It was great that a not wizard won.

I am sorry to say that I will not be able to make it there. I was looking forward to the tourney, but I have to work rest of this week, and sat night.  Plus, I have to be in back in town early sunday for fathers day. Good luck to all the players.

We have been playing around town. Sometimes at game time in castleton on center run road. I am working on getting my house fund up to full and will be buying someplace on the se side of town. It will be set up for gaming too. I would expect regular gaming sessions then. It is so sad that arsenal is no more. It had great location and hours of operation.
