Update on Group C

Arxiducs (wizard) vs Powlich (druid)-
Strong player with an even stronger druid! If my tricky wizard would have only had in the spellbook an arcane corruption and a ward!!  Powlich's druid won after my wizard became too old to keep playing. The end was probably inevitable, but better earlier than later (conceded). Thanks for a great game, Pow! I will always remember that epic reverse attack! :)

Arxiducs (wizard. 2nd time, yes) vs Reddicediaries (necro)-
This player is getting to such a level that I do not want to coincide in the same group during upcoming tourneys!  ;)
Skelly necro read me first turns as if my wizard was an open book. Supression wizard denied mana to the necro and finally achieved the necessary advantage to give the final blows with lightning bolts. Thanks for a great game, Red! and thanks to Sharkey for making the time to record the game.

Quick report on Group C.

Sailor Vulcan's Priest fell in the arena vs Arxiducs' Mr-Warlock.
Nice match that served both players to warm up and wake up their survival instincts in the prospect of this tournament. :)
Thanks for the match, Sailor; and thanks to AD for their guidance with rules and recording the encounter.

So it seems that my family is going on holidays leaving me behind (work!). The other side of the coin is that I will have a whole weekend for myself and thought about organizing a small casual MW tournament on OCTGN on 22 October 2016! Just a way to get some MW arena matches in a row (with a twist)!

One day tournament on OCTGN. You 'only' need 4 or 5 hours of your time on Saturday 22 October. The tournament will start at 14,00pm of CEST (UTC/GMT +2) and finish approximately at 20,00pm.
There will be a cap of 8 participants (just to make this manageable, and considering short notice is given),+ waiting list (if need be). We will launch this as soon as we get 4 participants enrolled.

3 rounds of 75 minutes will be played in a random bracket that will be published in this post right before the start of the tourney. Every participant can use as many mages or spellbooks as rounds are available. In other words, you can stick to play the 3 rounds with one single spellbook, or play every round with a different mage as long as these are legal on OCTGN. The cards to be used are all those available on OCTGN with official errata (remember the temples, wizards and towers, etc?) as applicable and with the only additional limitation for the Ballista (promo) that will be considered Unique and Warlord Only.

Advancing in the standings will be based on 'points difference':
points difference= [life value of your mage at the end of the match] -minus- [damage value of your mage at the end of the match] + [damage value of the oponent mage at the end of the match].
Matches may end by time or by death of one of the mages. If you win the match by death of the oponent mage before the 75 minutes are up, the winning mage receives a bonus of +10 points difference. Players cannot score negative points. Minimum score will be 0.
e.g.
Round 1: Adramelech warlock (life value: 33; damage value 4 at the end of the match) defeats a priestess (life value 35; damage value 36 at the end of the match) after 60 minutes.
Warlock scores 72 points. 33 life value – 4 damage value + 36 damage value of oponent mage + 10 bonus points for kill
Priest scores 3 points. 35 life value – 36 damage value + 4 damage value of oponent mage

Participants will accumulate their points difference round after round and these will be added up by the end of the round 3. The player with more points will be the winner, and so the rest will follow.

Every pair of mages will have to control the time on their own (i.e. with OCTGN clock) and report their results as soon as finished via PM to me for consolidation. We trust we are all grown ups with good sense of community engagement and sportsmanship. If any rules question needs to be posed, I think there will be enough people around on OCTGN to easily answer it.

I intend to participate as a player, so in case any questions on this, feel free. The idea is just to get to play a lot on that Saturday. The more the merrier! Really there is no need to be a pro to join here, the bracket will be random and probably not all players will play against each other. Come to make community and get a bunch of matches in a row on OCTGN!

To sign up, please PM me. I am 'arxiducs' in this forum and in OCTGN alike. Also can be found at arxiducs@gmail.com

If any clarification is needed, just let me know.

Events / Re: Ideas for Gen Con 2017.
« on: September 14, 2016, 11:24:17 AM »
Even if based on the assumption that you were working for AW, Bigfatchef's points are very valid. If GENCON tournament is meant to be the biggest and the greatest tournament (as we all assume), I think that the tournament should be defined and have concrete objectives. These should be defined by AW. I know, we are always asking more and more from this little company, but we just love the game so much that cannot do otherwise!
Based on the tournaments organized by other games and publishers that I have liked:
-Tournaments are part of a continuum. Normally organized with full involvement of the publisher. (assumption- for the case in point I understand there is limited involvement of AW).
-There is expectation created by announcements in the communities, new expansions coming out, the meta changes right on time just to make everybody doubt about what type of play can win, possibilities to get byes at regional tournaments (if possible), podcasts talking about it, interviews with the publisher talking about it on youtube, the prize pool is announced in full.
-Then, the tournament takes place. Normally the publisher plans it and estimates de number of seats they need and prepares for that. If someone signs in late, then there is a waiting list just in case. But the tournament is manageable because estimates are more or less accurate (if you practice, you can only get better at it!).
-After the tournament there is some media coverage by podcasters or youtubers, analysis, and fans replicate what the top 4 did (just for fun), and players know what to expect in terms of expansions and the next tournament the following year.

In a nutshell, I think that one can notice a big difference between those tournaments that count with full involvement of the publisher and those that do not. It would be great to have THE OFFICIAL tournament of MW at Gencon, or somewhere else (less expensive?).
At the end of the day, considering the time that the game takes, and the nature of our community (small but passionate), I cannot see an added value of organizing this at Gencon. Visibility is important, but there are many ways of achieving that.
And here is the main idea that I would like Silverclaw, Aaron and AW to think about:
If less money would go to rental of space at Gencon and more resources would go to create hype in the community and to PROMOTE the OFFICIAL tournament, it would be a good opportunity for fun and for business. There could be several alternatives and options to go around this. Of course, if you increase the level of resources for this tournament, you can always do it at gencon, but the promotion factor cannot be absent (as part of a continuum). With more promotion, I think the organizers (silverclaw, etc) would be able to do even a greater job.

I hope this helps. :)

General Discussion / Re: Mage Selection
« on: August 13, 2016, 05:36:09 AM »
It is just about making informed decisions. If clearly communicated, the set up for this format is know to all. After that you can only trust the maturity of the individual-potentially-disatisfied group members. It was just fine for us. We used a facebook group to have the community to vote for the format and later inform the results of the mage assingment process. This created expectation and comments in social media that made it even more fun.
Of course, I would recommend alternating this with standard tournament as per the needs.

In our local group of play we enjoyed a lot tournaments where the mages were assigned randomly to the players a couple of weeks in advance to the event. Results were public. All players were able to do their best strategizing around potential opponents and to go out of the comfort zone.
For us was a great way to stretch a bit the strategy part of the game!

A simple combo that has worked very well against spawnpoints and creatures is to move as fast as you can while casting cheap armor on you. Once in the zone with the spawn point cast the iron golem, cast hugin (then or even before if given the time) and have hugin cast battle fury and whirling strike on the golem as per the needs.
Iron golem´s quickaction attack is a great advantage.
I have never run the earth elemental. It is just too slow for my taste...
Good luck!

Spellbook Design and Construction / The Goattari Beastmasterrrrrrrrr
« on: March 27, 2016, 09:20:36 AM »
So here is an idea of goat-based beastmaster.
I just used it in the ADMWOpen for the first time against a Priest and it was very fun to play. Surprisingly effective too. Unfortunately, right when the action was starting I had some technical issues and could not continue the game.

The opening goes like this:

T1- lair + harmonize
T2- ram out of lair- wychwood faerie +void qc
T3- falcon our of lair- enchanters ring + enchant ram with dodge
T4- fellela + brace yourself on felella

This is a bit slow as an opening. you will only start threatening (and not very much) your opponent on turn three or four.
The idea behind is the following:
As soon as you have two rams on the table, you enchant them to make sure they can challenge the economy (conjurations) and you support them with the mage. Enchantments such as Dodge, iguana regrowth, brace yourself and Panther Stealth are very cheap and effective for this built if you combine the enchanters ring and the wychwood farie.
The rams pose a threat that most players will want to deal with it, but since you will most probably have more actions they will easily pay-off.
After the rams and some falcons/foxes are dead, you go for bigger creatures and some attack spells to finish the race.
Or that is at least the idea!
This could work even better with the Straywood beastmaster, but I like the mobility and capacity to surprise of the girl-beastmaster.
Have fun! and please do share your comments and observations. This is just a first draft.

Thanks!

What a fun match!
Both mages were in front of their own death as the last turn initiated. Leggyblonde´s Anvil Warlord cast a great boulder that left Arxiduc´s malakai priest incapacitated on the floor. He was immediately smashed by the huge hammer of the Dwarf Kriegshammer leaving the priest with only one life left. The priest stood up feeling dazed and replied with a swing against the mage which he completely missed. With his immediate quick action he cast a boulder and with very lucky rolling managed to take down the Dwarf Mage before the rest of the soldiers would annihilate him.
Result: Priest (Arx), barely survived the Anvil throne warlord (LeggyBlonde)
Thanks to Leggyblonde for such a fun match! A player with very good vibe and an example of sportsmanship.
